Study: top-ranking photo and video apps win with new use cases beyond photo capture and enhancement

New Suite 48 Analytics “Photo/Video App Market Study” provides an in-depth analysis of the top-ranking photo and video apps’ use cases, their developer’s characteristics and eight other variables.

Jan 21, 2016 – With the number of photo and video apps on the market still rapidly growing (currently at 78,000, more than twice as many as two years ago), the question is: what competitive advantages characterize the current breed of top-ranking photo and video apps? Who are they, what is their main use case, their user rating, how long have they been on the market, and what media types do they support?

To answer these and other questions the new Suite 48 Analytics Photo/Video App Market Study analyzed the top 20 photo and video apps listed in the US Google Play and Apple iTunes stores on January 1 as free Android, paid Android, grossing Android, free iOS, paid iOS, or grossing iOS apps.  Supplemented with the top 20 apps recorded for the previous two months, the study provides an in-depth analysis of a total of 146 photo and video apps.

The study reports that the most frequently addressed use case among top-ranking photo/video apps is what it calls “Combine” – functionality that enables the user to combine photos with other photos, video clips with other videos, or photos with videos. Combine apps also include apps that facilitate combining photos or videos with other objects, such as text, frames, stickers, or clipart. 29% of the top-ranking photo/video apps currently have Combine as the main use case, followed by 18% that primarily offer Photo Editing features.

Not only are Combine apps the largest use case category among top-ranking apps, the study’s cross-tab analysis also reveals that Combine apps differ significantly from other use case categories in that, for instance, they have a larger portion of 4.5 or higher user ratings than any other use case category.

According to Hans Hartman, President of Suite 48 Analytics, the popularity of Combine apps signifies that smartphone photographers’ needs have surpassed plain photo editing or capture.

“As photos have rapidly become a prime communication medium through chat, messaging and other photo-centric communication tools, smartphone users increasingly make pragmatic decisions on how to maximize the visual impact of their photos, whether they combine them into a collage, mix them with video clips, or add text or graphical elements.”

The 59-page report includes cross-tab analysis to determine statistically significant differences for the core segments within the following variables:

• Main use case
• Age
• App rating
• Pricing
• In-app purchasing options
• Top-ranking on multiple OS platforms
• Geo of developer
• Size of developer
• Operating system
• Paid/free offering

Maker Ed Receives Grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to Strengthen Connections Between Maker Educators.

OAKLAND, CA – Jan 21, 2016 – Responding to an ever-present need among maker educators to connect and learn from one another, Maker Education Initiative (Maker Ed), with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is expanding its community building efforts.

In conversations with its wide-ranging partners and affiliates working to bring more making opportunities to youth, Maker Ed consistently hears from educators that they struggle to find information, collaborators, resources and the support they need to spark, strengthen, and sustain their maker-centered learning efforts.

To help meet that demand and foster connections, and with generous support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Maker Ed will create a combination of online and in-person offerings – including national and regional convenings, a robust and interconnected suite of online community offerings, and a host of additional resources to help build and strengthen the current network of maker educators. The organization will be hiring two new staff members to lead these efforts: a community manager and a community coordinator.

Maker Ed also understands from its deep involvement with the educator community that it would not be sufficient to develop these offerings without the considerable input of educators; Maker Ed believes that educators’ needs, perspectives, and insights are crucial to ensuring the successful creation of valued, relevant, and useful resources to build community. Therefore, before diving into this project, Maker Ed will conduct a thorough survey of the existing landscape of maker educator communities to better understand what is working and what is missing. Those interested in keeping up to date on the project are invited to join Maker Ed’s mailing list (and indicate their interest in community) to receive notifications on how to get involved.

As Maker Ed works towards these goals, the organization will also be incorporating lessons learned from its past community building efforts – from hosting a Maker Educator Convening in May 2015 to launching an online directory of maker programs in the fall of 2015 to managing specialized online communities for its Maker Corps and Maker VISTA programs each year.

Of these planned efforts, Maker Ed’s Executive Director, Warren (Trey) Lathe said, “We have heard from so many maker educators that it is extremely valuable to have the opportunity to make connections and to have access to new ideas, energy, and information through communities. We are thrilled that the Gates Foundation recognizes the value of this work and grateful that they are supporting our efforts to create a community that is useful and accessible to this audience.”

KOLKATA, India – January 25, 2016 – “Flying Sindbad,” a new, exciting and moving documentary, was recently announced. The film will focus on the Royal Bengal Tiger, using advanced drone cameras in the Sunderban (UNESCO site), to capture unseen footage. The Sunderban Jungle has long been characterized by the Royal Bengal tigers that inhabit the land. Although these big cats are known predators and dangerous to be around, their majesty lends a certain serene character to the area. To be there is to be in the den of a creature that for thousands of years thrived at the apex of the food chain. Strong, proud, and impressive, the descriptor Royal is indeed well-suited, the presence of these tigers seeping into every blade of grass and even the skies above the Sunderban. It is truly a land of the tigers.

Now, however, these animals that once thrived are struggling even to get by. In 2004, there were an estimated 256 Royal Bengal tigers in the Sunderban. By 2013, that number had dropped by more than 50%, to 103. It would seem logical to point the finger directly at society and poachers, among other environmental impacts, but the reality of the situation is not so clear-cut. While poachers have played a major role, it is now the lack of genetic diversity among Royal Bengal tigers that is contributing to their heavy losses. With so few genetic mutations available, the tigers’ hunting skills have suffered. In a way, this is an even more disappointing conclusion, because while society can arrest and jail the poachers, a lack of genetic diversity is a much more complicated problem to solve.

SO, “Flying Sindbad,” is dedicated to raising awareness on these Tigers and help research projects with shooting an authentic documentary film. These filmmakers will be using a drone camera in the Sunderban in order to capture never-before-seen perspectives of this stunning landscape along with its chief residents, the man-eating Royal Bengal tigers. In light of this situation, their team has taken on the task of visiting and photographing the Royal Bengal tigers that call the Sunderban (meaning the “beautiful jungle”) home. Because the Sunderban, situated between India and Bangladesh along the Indian Ocean, is a UNESCO heritage site, getting permission has presented its own set of challenges. They have already gotten past this stage, however, and they were all set to begin filming in January 2016, weather permitting. However, before this documentary, dedicated to raising awareness on Bengal tigers, can be made, these filmmakers need help. That’s why they launched this Kickstarter campaign. The goal of this project is to raise $1,000 NZD by February 23, 2016. The funds raised will cover much of the costs associated with the project, making it much more feasible to do what they are doing.
