According to Weitz, the problem of thermal buildup in artificial turf lies in the materials used to manufacture it. Thermoplastic, or PE, retains heat in a way that natural grass doesn’t, trapping solar rays and heating the surface to 150 degrees or more. Although this heat build-up is not a safety issue, it’s undoubtedly one of comfort, and so far, attempts to resolve the issue have been, for the most part, insufficient.
Over the past decade, the increasing power of computerization available to researchers made it possible to construct sophisticated models of the vaporization process that improved the capacity to predict heat transfer. The liquid-vapor phase-change phenomena, best observed from microscale and nanoscale perspectives, led to the idea of applying the evaporation principles to synthetic turf fields. TCool technology takes place during the hydraulic phase change when a liquid substance becomes gas. When the solar rays heat the turf surface, its energy helps to break the bonds between molecules of water preserved within TCool infill particles, allowing some molecules to escape in the form of gas, decreasing the kinetic energy of remaining particles, and cooling down the turf surface in the process.
While watering turf fields alone has a short-term cooling effect, the TCool infill applied to the artificial grass surface traps water inside and removes heat from the surface using the solar energy. TCool system is the most effective during the summer months. Testing confirms molecular dynamic simulations. TCool application results in decreasing the artificial grass surface temperature by 50 degrees.
According to NASA’s ongoing temperature analysis, the average global temperature on Earth has increased by 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880. Two-thirds of the warming has happened since 1975. Comparing to a two-degree drop in the past that plunged the Earth into an Ice Age, a 1.4 degree is significant. Thousands of square feet of synthetic turf are being installed in the United States every year, including major athletic sports venues. Galassi and Bortolin studies, conducted in the University of Nevada and the Desert Research Institute in 2009, found that the maximum surface temperature of artificial greens (69 degrees F higher than that of irrigated natural grass), is due to the lack of heat transfer from the synthetic blades to underlying infill material.
